MATERNITY & FAMILY PORTRAITS

Why I Photograph Family & Maternity Portraits

The more time passes, the more I appreciate photographing families.

I am fortunate to have many photos of myself and my family throughout my life. Some are portraits, but my favorites are the snapshots — moments in the living room of the house I grew up in, sitting on the floor with our dog Bambi, gathered around my grandparents’ kitchen table, or my brother and I playing on the Sit ’n Spin. These photographs help me remember not only what people looked like, but who they were and the place they held in my life.

That is why some of my favorite sessions take place at home or somewhere meaningful to a family. Whether cuddled together in bed, playing in the backyard, or visiting a favorite place, these photographs capture not only the people, but the places that hold their memories.

And don’t get me started on maternity portraits. Like photographing couples, I often think about the “dream” in my dream. experience. remember. philosophy. You can see it in their eyes as they imagine the person they are about to meet and the life that is about to change. There are not many things more beautiful to witness.

As silly as it may sound, I often feel like my true clients are the children — and even future generations — who will one day look back on these photographs. My hope is to preserve the people, relationships, and memories that families hold most dear.

  • I'm just amazed at you and the photographs. They are just SO beautiful and I feel SO fortunate to have them, to know you and to have access to your amazing talent; and to be able to have documented being pregnant with Pip; to be out on the dock at our favorite place, the same place we were 5 years ago getting married... Beyond how special all of that is, you're just SO damned talented, Dana - I can't believe how beautiful the photographs are - you make anything beautiful... I feel really lucky to have found you... I could just gush about you... Everyone who has seen these photographs - just brought to tears. Thank you so much.
