MATERNITY & FAMILY PORTRAITS
Why I Photograph Family & Maternity Portraits
The more time passes, the more I appreciate photographing families.
I am fortunate to have many photos of myself and my family throughout my life. Some are portraits, but my favorites are the snapshots — moments in the living room of the house I grew up in, sitting on the floor with our dog Bambi, gathered around my grandparents’ kitchen table, or my brother and I playing on the Sit ’n Spin. These photographs help me remember not only what people looked like, but who they were and the place they held in my life.
That is why some of my favorite sessions take place at home or somewhere meaningful to a family. Whether cuddled together in bed, playing in the backyard, or visiting a favorite place, these photographs capture not only the people, but the places that hold their memories.
And don’t get me started on maternity portraits. Like photographing couples, I often think about the “dream” in my dream. experience. remember. philosophy. You can see it in their eyes as they imagine the person they are about to meet and the life that is about to change. There are not many things more beautiful to witness.
As silly as it may sound, I often feel like my true clients are the children — and even future generations — who will one day look back on these photographs. My hope is to preserve the people, relationships, and memories that families hold most dear.
