CARING FOR YOUR ORIGINAL FILM NEGATIVES

For clients who have received original negatives, these materials have been carefully stored and preserved. With proper care, they can last for generations. The guidance below is also helpful for anyone looking to properly store and protect film negatives.

1. Keep in the Current Archival Materials

  • Your negatives are stored in acid-free sleeves within an archival box, along with acid-free tissue paper. I recommend keeping them in this original packaging.

2. Protect from Light

  • Store negatives in darkness or low-light conditions.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or bright indoor light.

3. Store in a Cool, Dry Environment

  • Keep negatives in a stable environment away from heat and humidity.

  • Ideal storage is in a cool, dry space (not attics, basements, or garages).

  • Maintain consistent temperature and humidity over time.

4. Handle with Care

  • Limit handling whenever possible.

  • Always handle negatives by the edges.

  • Avoid touching the surface to prevent fingerprints, oils, or scratches.

  • Consider using clean cotton gloves when handling.

5. Keep Them Clean

  • Do not attempt to wipe or clean the negatives with household materials.

  • If cleaning is needed, use proper archival tools or consult me or another professional.

6. Avoid Bending or Pressure

  • Store negatives flat and avoid stacking heavy items on top — do not store them upright (like books on a shelf).

  • Do not bend or fold the film.

If you haven’t already done so, I strongly encourage digitizing your favorite images for long-term preservation.
